Hunting Season Stays in Antonito: Lodging for Elk & Deer Hunters

At Steam Train Hotel, we’ve hosted elk and deer hunters for years, and we know exactly what makes a good basecamp. If you’re looking for reliable, comfortable Antonito hunting lodging, we’re here to help.

What Makes Antonito a Prime Hunting Hub?

We’re tucked into one of the best-kept secrets in Colorado hunting, right near GMU 81, with fast access to prime elk and mule deer territory in the San Juan Mountains. Hunters who stay with us can head out early and be deep in the backcountry within the hour.

From Conejos Peak to La Manga Pass and Trujillo Meadows, the landscape here is perfect for tracking game.

These areas are known for their strong elk populations and healthy mule deer herds, especially in the early rifle and late archery seasons. Plus, Antonito’s just far enough off the beaten path that things stay quiet.

If you’re scouting out the best places to stay for hunting in Antonito, the key is being close to the land, not just near a highway. That’s what makes our town such a solid home base.

Lodging That Works for Real Hunters

Hunting trips aren’t like regular vacations; you don’t need a spa or room service. You need a place that’s warm, quiet, and ready before sunrise, and that’s exactly how we’ve set up our space at Steam Train Hotel.

There are plenty of elk hunting cabins in Antonito, but not all are within walking distance of food, fuel, or a hot cup of coffee. (Or better yet, close to the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad.)

FAQ's

When is elk hunting season in Colorado?

Elk season in Colorado typically runs from early September through late November, depending on the weapon type and tag. Archery kicks things off, followed by muzzleloader and rifle seasons.

Yes, you can find rustic cabins in the surrounding area, and our own Steam Train Hotel offers a private on-site cabin that’s perfect for hunters looking for quiet and comfort with easy access to town.

Some do! We can point you toward local outfitters who offer guided hunts and lodging packages, or help you build your own custom combo by staying with us and booking a guide separately. Just ask at check-in or give us a call before your trip!

Definitely. First tip: book early—especially if you’re coming during peak rifle season. Second: prep for altitude; Antonito sits at over 7,000 feet. And finally, know your GMU (we’re right by 81) and keep your gear simple but solid.

Let’s just say some guests have had experiences that weren’t in their hunting plans. A few creaky floors and flickering lights come with the territory in a 100-year-old hotel, and we’ve heard more than one story about “someone” walking the halls at night. But don’t worry; whatever’s here, they let hunters sleep just fine.
